The Mirror of New Beginnings

A Vishu Story from Home and Beyond

In one family Vishu was not just a festival it was a feeling that stayed in their hearts. It was something they carried with them wherever they went.

The celebration began the evening before. In every home a simple and beautiful Vishu Kani was arranged. A bowl of rice was placed in the center. Around it were fruits like mango and jackfruit, vegetables and a few coins. Bright yellow flowers made everything look fresh and happy. A mirror was placed behind it clean and shining. A small lamp glowed softly lighting up the whole arrangement.
.
Early in the morning before sunrise the house was quiet. One by one the children were woken up. They were told to close their eyes. A gentle hand held theirs and led them slowly forward. There was always a little excitement and a little fear of bumping into something but also a lot of trust.

Then they were asked to open their eyes.

The first thing they saw was their face in the mirror along with fruits, flowers coins and light. Some children named everything they saw. Some just smiled and looked again and again. Some touched the items and then their eyes as if they wanted to keep that moment.

Then came the coin placed gently in their hands. It was small but very special. Some wanted to save it. Some thought of what treat they could buy.

The kitchen slowly filled with the smell of food. Sweet dishes made with jackfruit, coconut and ghee. Crispy snacks and warm delicacies . Everything was cooked with care. Everyone sat together and ate.

For many the favorite was the jackfruit sweet. They remembered how it was bought, prepared and made ready just for this day. Even when things became easier later the taste and happiness stayed the same.

After this there were baths, temple visits and more blessings. More coins from elders. Children played games, laughed and tried not to fall asleep.
In some places crackers filled the air bringing more joy to the day.

This family did not celebrate in just one place. In another city far away the same Vishu Kani was arranged. The same mirror the same fruits the same flowers but the day had a different feel.

There were also trips to markets where buying clothes became fun. Bargaining was like a game. The joy was in talking, laughing and getting a good deal.
.
Back in their homes one idea stayed the same. The Vishu Kani had only simple things rice, fruits, vegetables and coins. Nothing extra. It reminded them that this is all they really need.

The mirror was not just for seeing. It made them think about what they had, what they were and what they hoped for.

Some remembered being woken up early and guided with love. Some remembered the smell of flowers and fruits. Some remembered playing games to stay awake. Some remembered holding that one coin tightly in their hands.
Even when life changed and places changed these memories stayed.

In this family Vishu was about being together. It was about love passed from one to another. It was about small things that felt big.

And sometimes Vishu brought special moments too. Good news that made someone happy. Old photos that brought back memories. A chance to do something new. Proud moments in studies. Beautiful prayers that grew into something more.

All these made the day feel even more special. Because

Vishu was not just about what they did. It was about what they felt.
