Ramassery Talks
Origin of the Universe
Host - Srinidhi
Moderators - Aravind and Vinu
Guest - Geetha
Welcome
Host Srinidhi opens the show with energy and warmth, inviting listeners to explore one of the biggest questions ever asked:
How did the whole entire universe start?
The tone is curious, joyful, and accessible this is a show for everyone, not just scientists.
Meet Geetha
The guest, Geetha, brings a rare combination of expertise and wonder. She holds a PhD in Biochemistry - the study of the tiny molecular "building blocks" that make up all living things. But her curiosity didn't stop at the lab. Geetha is also a deep student of ancient Indian philosophy, particularly the Bhagavad Gita.
Her driving question: What if science and ancient wisdom are actually telling the same story?
Her journey was shaped by family - her father, her sister Uma, and brother-in-law Rajasekar and by dedicated early-morning study sessions with teacher Swami Paramarthananda, starting at 5:30 AM.
The Science Corner
Geetha explains what the Big Bang Theory actually says
.
Geetha explains that approximately 13.8 billion years ago, the entire universe existed as a Singularity - a single, incredibly tiny, unimaginably hot and dense point.
Everything that exists today - every star, every planet, every particle of energy was compressed into that one dot.
Then came the Big Bang Theory. The universe expanded rapidly, cooling as it grew. Over time, chaos gave way to order. Galaxies formed. Stars ignited. Planets took shape. The laws of physics guided an explosive, messy beginning into the structured, beautiful cosmos we see today.
The wonder of the moment: Wait - you mean everything? All from one tiny dot? Yes. Exactly that says Geetha
Ancient Wisdom Corner
What does the Bhagavad Gita say about the origin of everything?
Geetha reveals a striking parallel. In the Gita, Lord Krishna speaks of Brahman the ultimate, formless, infinite source of all existence. Like the scientific singularity, Brahman is the original stuff from which everything in the universe emerged.
But Brahman goes one step further. It is not merely raw material it is also intelligence. It is the underlying consciousness that ensures the universe doesn't remain a chaotic mess, but instead organizes itself into stars, ecosystems, and life.
Geetha then adds a mind-bending idea from Advaita Vedanta - a school of Indian philosophy whose name, coincidentally, echoes two children in the family - Advait and Vedant, grandchildren of Muthu
In Advaita Vedanta, Brahman is simultaneously the material of the universe and the architect that shapes it. The creator and the creation are not separate they are one.
Story Time - Six Analogies
To make these big ideas feel real, Geetha offers six memorable analogies:
1. The Ocean and Its Waves
The ocean produces waves. A small wave and a massive wave are both made of the same water. We humans, planets, stars are like waves. The singularity or Brahman is the ocean. Different forms, same source.
2. The Spider's Web
A spider doesn't buy silk from a shop. It spins its web from its own body. It is both the maker and the material. In the same way, the universe was not built from something external- it came from within the source itself.
3. The Gardener
Immediately after the Big Bang, atoms and molecules were created. These atoms and molecules were dispersed randomly in space. So,a chaotic scenario emerged. This type of chaos cannot exist for long.
So in order to create order from chaos, some kind of vision is required. In order to implement the vision some kind of intelligence is needed. It is here the inherent intelligence of Singularity assumes significance. An analogy for this is the Gardener’s vision to create beautiful garden from a place which was messy and chaotic.Gardener uses his imagination and intelligence to create order .Similarly in universe also orderly creation happens from a chaotic scenario
4. Scrabble Tiles
A single Scrabble tile is just a letter meaningless on its own. But when the right letters come together in the right context, they form words, sentences, and whole stories. The universe works the same way simple building blocks, combined with intelligence and context, produce infinite meaning.
5. LEGO Bricks
A box of LEGO contains simple, identical-looking pieces. Alone, each brick is unremarkable. But bring them together with intention, and you can build almost anything. The fundamental particles of the universe are like those bricks- basic, but capable of extraordinary things when combined.
6. The Seven Music Notes
There are only seven basic musical notes - Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni. Yet from those seven notes, musicians across history have created millions of unique and beautiful songs. The universe began from one source, yet produced infinite variety and wonder.
The Big Idea
The episode closes with a clear and elegant summary:
The universe began from one single source
- Science calls it the Singularity.
- Ancient wisdom calls it Brahman.
Both traditions agree on the essentials: everything shares a common origin, and there is a profound, beautiful logic behind how stars, seeds, and people came to be. You don't need a laboratory or a scripture to feel this truth - just look at the ocean, or listen to your favorite song.
